Some carriers — like UnitedHealthcare and Aetna MA — pay agencies both the street-level commission and the override together in a single lump sum on the commission statement.
If you pay your LOAs a percentage (%), this combined payout can cause you to overpay unless you adjust the Comp Plan.
This article shows you how to account for combined payments so you pay LOAs correctly.
When You Need This
- Applies: When LOAs are paid a percentage (%).
- Does NOT apply: When LOAs are paid a flat dollar amount per policy.
Example Scenario
- Normal street-level payment: $313
- Override payment: $50
- Total received from carrier: $363 (combined street + override)
If you pay 80% of street, the Agent should receive:
80% × $313 = $250
But if you apply 80% to the total combined amount:
80% × $363 = $290
That’s $40 more than intended.
How to Adjust the Comp Plan
To prevent overpayment:
-
Calculate the correct percentage:
Desired agent pay ÷ Total combined payment = $250 ÷ $363 = 0.68 (68%)
- Create a special Comp Plan just for UHC/Aetna MedAdvantage street + override scenarios.
- Advance % = 68%
- Renewal % = 68%
- Chargeback % = 68%
- HRA % = Keep at 80% (overrides don’t affect HRA payments)
Naming Tip: Use a descriptive name, e.g., ABC MedAdvantage 68 so you can quickly identify it.
Applying the Adjusted Comp Plan
- In the Home tab, assign the adjusted Comp Plan to all relevant Agent + Carrier pairs for Unitedhealthcare Med Adv and Aetna MA.
- To apply to multiple Agents at once:
- Sort the list by Carrier so all Unitedhealthcare Med Adv rows are grouped together.
- Drag down the assigned Comp Plan to apply it to all Agents or Uplines in one step.
Calculating LOA Agent Payroll Using If/Then Rules
Alternatively, you can calculate LOA Agent Payroll directly in If/Then Rules.
This method is useful if you prefer not to create separate Comp Plans for specific carriers or scenarios.
In your If/Then Rule, set the Then section to calculate Agent Payroll using a custom formula, for example:
Then Agent Payroll = (<commission> - 5000) * 0.8
This subtracts $50 from the Commission value before calculating 80% (ComTrack stores amounts in cents).
You can adjust the formula to fit your own structure — for instance, removing the subtraction if no override is included, or changing the percentage for specific carriers.
Summary
Use a reduced percentage when carriers combine street and override payments.
Or, automate the adjustment using an If/Then Rule that applies your formula dynamically.
Either method ensures your LOAs are paid accurately without overpayment.
